Nutrition for your Athlete

PARENTS!
With tournament season upon us, it is our responsibility as parents of young athletes to ensure our kids are well-fueled for intense training sessions. The physical demands of the sport are obvious; what’s more important is that our children receive the proper nutrition that will help them perform at their very best. A well balanced meal consists of lean proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Here is a sample meal plan, adjust according to your child’s preference, keeping in mind that introducing any added sugar, or processed foods will be counterproductive to their goal.


Sample Meal Plan for a Young Athlete
(Varies greatly based on individual goals, activity, intensity, current weight and gender)

7:45 am Breakfast
Bowl of Kashi Heart to Heart Cereal with fresh berries
1 cup organic 1% milk

10:00 am Morning Snack
½ cup trail mix with dried fruit and nuts (dried cranberries/cherries with raw UNSALTED walnuts/almonds) you can make your own

11:30 pm Lunch
Minimally processed turkey meat on whole wheat bread with light mayo
1% organic milk
Bag of Sun Chips
Small bag of baby carrots
Banana

3:30 pm Early Dinner
5 oz grilled chicken
1 cup broccoli and carrots
1 cup whole wheat pasta with red sauce agave nectar

5:30 pm pre-training snack
1 slice whole wheat bread with banana slices and organic nut butter (cashew, almond, peanut) and 10 oz Gatorade

8-9 pm Recovery
20 oz Gatorade, peanut butter sandwich on Whole Grain Bread or ½ cup trail mix
